Pokémon – Malamar – Pitch Black ME05 – 052/084 – Base Uncommon – Near Mint is a Darkness/Psychic‑type non‑foil base card from the 2026 Mega Evolution Era Pitch Black expansion. Malamar’s twisted tentacle posture, neon‑violet mind‑flare glow and corrupted‑energy shading make it one of the most sinister mid‑set cards in ME05. Its hypnotic silhouette, warped highlights and crisp outlines reinforce the expansion’s distortion‑theme aesthetic, giving Malamar a commanding presence in the binder layout.
In tournament play, Malamar acts as a mid‑game disruption Pokémon for Darkness or Psychic‑hybrid decks. Its attacks typically apply controlled damage, force opponent repositioning or interfere with board development. Malamar’s retreat cost and attack sequencing make it a reliable evolution target for Inkay, offering improved pressure and more consistent mid‑range tempo. While not a heavy sweeper, Malamar’s role is to destabilize opponents, create tempo swings and support transitions into stronger Darkness/Psychic finishers.
The artwork for Malamar 052/084 was illustrated by ME05 staff artist H. Kurobane, who leaned heavily into the corrupted‑energy narrative by emphasizing neon psychic distortion and warped tentacle geometry. The deep‑sea‑void backdrop is tinted with purple fracture lines to reflect the spreading ME05 aura. Kurobane used glowing rim highlights, swirling energy arcs and subtle environmental warping to reinforce Malamar’s hypnotic, mind‑bending presence. This stylistic direction fits perfectly with Pitch Black’s theme of Pokémon becoming altered by corrupted energy.
